Luffy seeks the One Piece despite being unable to swim; his encounters with swordsman Zoro and timid Koby give this first volume humor and heart.

  1. Freedom, not conquest, as the prize

The highest title worth chasing can be defined by who is most free, not by who rules the most. Wanting to be at the top then means wanting no one above you, not wanting people beneath you.

  2. A dream gives each life direction

Each person who joins the journey carries their own dream, and that dream steers what they choose and what they fight for. Following it with full commitment is presented as the thing that keeps a person on course.

  3. Helping others reach their dreams

Someone who knows how much a goal matters to them can see the same need in other people, even strangers who will never join them. That recognition turns into practical help.

  4. Wearing the uniform does not guarantee justice

Members of a force that claims to stand for justice can be decent or corrupt, so a badge alone proves nothing about character. Standing up to an abusive official counts as much as standing up to an open bully.

  5. Outlaw is a label, not a verdict

The same name for rule-breakers can cover selfish predators and people who simply refuse to obey an unjust ruler. Whether someone is good depends on what they do, not on which side of the law they stand.

  6. Feared reputations hide gentler sides

Someone whom people call a demon and fear on sight can turn out to have a strong sense of honor and real kindness. Reputation flattens a person, and closer contact shows more than one note.

  7. Strength is not the only tool

Physical power alone does not settle conflicts or make someone fit for a hard life. Other qualities count too, especially how a person treats those around them.

  8. Great powers come with a matching weakness

A gift that makes someone extraordinary can also take away an ordinary ability for good. A body that stretches like rubber, for example, can never swim again.

  9. Laughter and grief side by side

A story can move from slapstick to tears from one page to the next without either one cancelling the other. A comic fight can also be a serious stand against cruelty, with real violence and sacrifice behind the jokes.

  10. A dying word can launch an era

A single public statement made at the moment of death can set off a whole generation's rush toward a goal. One ending becomes a starting signal for thousands of other people.
