A grandson pieces together his grandmother’s memories of a grandfather’s escape from a wartime camp in a darkly comic saga of inherited lies.

  1. Retelling legends can reconnect families

A family's private myths simplify people as much as they explain them. Yet retelling and painting those legends can be the only way left to reach relatives after years of neglect, cruelty and misunderstanding. The aim is not to redeem anyone but to find release through making art from what happened.

  2. Vague threats frighten more

A monster no one can describe is scarier than one with known habits, because the listener fills the gap with every fear they already carry. A child told that something under the stairs is so dangerous no one even knows what it does will link it to every scrap of adult talk about dogs and creatures, until the fear keeps the whole household awake.

  3. Running from mistakes multiplies them

When people flee their mistakes instead of learning from them, the damage does not end. It passes to whoever stays behind, and they go on to make more. A family can repeat its failures across four generations this way.

  4. Go through darkness, not around

Being passively soaked in dread is worse than walking through it deliberately. Meeting fear head-on gives a person some control over it; letting it pass through you leaves you its victim.

  5. Refusal can power survival

In extreme danger, a single inner refusal, a NO to captors, hunting dogs and the cold of the camp, can carry a body forward when strength and planning are gone. Survival then runs on the trance of saying no rather than on hope.

  6. Dreaming of a slightly different life

People can stay fixed on the belief that life would be perfect if one thing were only a little different. Unable to find words or gestures for what they feel, they fall back on mere symbols, and stay apart from each other.

  7. Pragmatic versus passionate living

Many hard choices come down to living sensibly or living by passion, sharpest when one must pick between two great loves. Neither path spares a person, and whichever one they take shapes what their children inherit.
