What the world is reading
Walk into a good independent bookshop and look at the table in the center. It holds books people are buying, recommending, discussing, and giving to one another. The selection changes from place to place. Popular brings those tables together.
Some books become global bestsellers. Many others are loved within a particular country, language, or community and remain little known beyond it. Both forms of popularity matter. We focus on books published since 1995, so this is a library of what readers are picking up in our own time. We built this library geographically so that worldwide successes sit alongside books whose importance is rooted in a place.
Every book must meet two tests. First, there must be good reason to believe that people actually read, recommend, lend, discuss, or return to it. Second, the book must reward the time spent with it.
That reward can be a compelling story, laughter, recognition, useful knowledge, memorable characters, or a new way of seeing another life. Our goal is more than 100 geographical shelves, spanning every kind of reading: novels, memoirs, history, crime, romance, children’s books, graphic works, practical writing, and stories born online.
We looked beyond international prizes and English-language attention. We examined sales, reprints, adaptations, bookseller knowledge, reader communities, and the long lives books acquire in their own cultures.
Some of these books are famous everywhere. Others are deeply loved at home and waiting to be discovered elsewhere. Popular will keep changing as we encounter new reading communities and find books worth adding—or removing.
We hope you discover something the rest of the world has been enjoying—and find your next book to buy, borrow, own, and read.
About the research: This library was built through research assisted by AI. While we work carefully, some information may be incomplete or inaccurate. Inclusion reflects a book’s readership and value; it does not endorse every claim its author makes.
