A gifted athlete's throwing collapse makes performance anxiety, team dependence, identity, and recovery central to the plot.

  1. Suffering people accept must make sense

To lead people, ask what story each one wishes someone would tell about him, then tell it, flaws and obstacles included, with a hint of doom. People will gladly endure hardship as long as the hardship fits a story that makes sense to them.

  2. Chosen chains make life feel easy

Binding yourself to one single wish can feel lighter than freedom. When every sacrifice serves that one aim, the days become simple and the sacrifices make sense instead of feeling like losses.

  3. The craft may only carry perfection

What looks like love of a sport or skill may really be love of perfection itself: a simple life in which every move has meaning. The activity is just the medium through which that wish gets acted out.

  4. Doubt at the edge of reach

When something people have strived for starts slipping away, the doubt that sets in reminds them of their limits and clouds their judgement. That clouded judgement can then cause the very damage they feared.

  5. Pointless arts that say something true

A game is loved as an art: apparently pointless, done by people with special aptitude, its value impossible to paraphrase. Yet it seems to say something true about being alive, able to reach and even create beauty, and someday dying.

  6. One error can undo a gift

A single routine action that goes badly wrong can shake a highly skilled performer's confidence until simple tasks become impossible. The collapse comes from self-doubt rather than lost ability, and it can threaten a whole future.

  7. Success feels provisional from inside

Seen from inside, even great achievements can feel temporary and fragile. Winners can lose because they never felt secure in their winning.

  8. One person's failure spreads outward

A single person's mistake rarely stays private; it upends the lives of the people tied to him. Our fates are entwined with those around us, so one failure can send several lives into a tailspin at once.

  9. Ambition has limits beside commitments

Commitment to one's own ambition and commitment to others pull against each other. Chasing a dream tests both how far ambition can go and what it owes to family, friends, and love.
