The All Blacks’ long-serving mental-performance coach explains the leadership, culture, accountability, and pressure practices used from 2004 to 2023.

  1. Know me, be me, stay me

People hold steady under pressure when they know who they are, act as who they are, and keep being that person when things get hard. That settled identity works as an anchor. So the coaching effort goes into a 'to-be list' of qualities more than a to-do list of tasks.

  2. Skill fails without the right mindset

Technical ability only shows up when the mind is in order. Emotions can't be switched off, and they often cause trouble, so the aim is for the mind to be stronger than the emotions rather than to feel nothing. Often the main obstacle to moving forward is getting out of your own way.

  3. Walking past sets the standard

Whatever falls short and goes unchallenged becomes the real standard of the group, whatever the stated rules say. Each person carries the daily duty to turn up and live up to the role they hold. Doing the work that day matters more than slogans on the wall.

  4. Silence kills, vulnerability strengthens

A team can't fix what its members won't say out loud, so a problem nobody names can't be trained away. Leaders need to make it safe enough for people to admit weakness. When they do, openness about struggle becomes a sign of strength, not a liability.

  5. Wins without character feel hollow

A victory gained without integrity brings no lasting satisfaction, so how you win counts as much as whether you win. Character is part of the goal itself, not an optional extra.

  6. Build on what can't be taken

Position, selection and circumstance can be removed by other people, but your mindset and your character cannot. Working on those two things makes you hard to beat, because no setback or opponent can strip them from you. Your value comes from your mindset, not from where you happen to work.

  7. Pressure is the arena

Pressure is not something to escape or defeat. It is the setting where performance happens. Being well prepared means you would change nothing if you were given extra days, and that readiness lets you meet pressure calmly.

  8. The team towers above individuals

Internal competition should lift the whole group, not create an elite inner circle that looks after itself. Individual stars serve the team's standards, not the reverse. Leaders should lead from who they are, not from the authority of their position.
