Ada grows up between Nigeria and the United States while multiple spirit selves contest her body, survival, desire and sense of personhood.

  1. Consent erased by absent memory

Someone can learn after the fact that sex happened that they never agreed to, because they were never asked and cannot remember it. The knowledge arrives slowly as a physical sickness rather than as a clear memory.

  2. The truest voice may not be yours

When a person is worn down, the selves within can tell their story more truly than they can themselves. Authorship of one's own life can rightly pass to the others who make up that self.

  3. Inner selves as real beings

A divided self can be understood as several real spirits sharing one body, each with its own name, character and behaviour. They are neither illusions nor symbols. The person both suffers from them and leans on them, so they cannot simply be explained away.

  4. Indigenous frameworks rival clinical ones

A traditional spiritual account of personhood can explain inner conflict as fully as Western psychiatric schemes can. Taking it seriously pushes us to question what we assume causes mental suffering and how that suffering shows itself.

  5. The pain of fixed flesh

For a being that is both spirit and human, the deepest distress is being locked into one physical form that forces a category on it. Losing the freedom to slip between categories hurts more than being misnamed.

  6. Peace through naming the many

Relief comes from recognising conflicting selves and giving them a name within one's own tradition, rather than forcing them into a single purified identity. Calm comes from making room for being both one and many.

  7. Translations shrink sacred meanings

Moving a name or belief into another language or religion can leave it both correct and incomplete. A name glossed as 'precious' really meant the egg of a sacred python. The lost layer can be the very spiritual meaning that explains a person's nature.

  8. A child prayed into flesh

In this cosmology a child can be the bodily answer to a prayer, tied to land and blood through where they are born. A child born this way arrives already open to the spirit world, which can make them a source of deep worry to their family.
