  1. Scientific thinking as prediction-gap learning

Scientific thinking means continually comparing what you predict will happen next with what actually happens. You then adjust your understanding and your actions based on what the difference teaches you. Done daily, this small loop is how an organization improves and adapts.

  2. The routine outlasts the solution

Lasting advantage comes not from any particular solution but from how well an organization has mastered a routine for producing fitting solutions again and again. The path ahead is unpredictable, so copying today's answers is fragile. Practicing a general way of developing your own solutions is the meta-skill that works in any situation.

  3. Scientific thinking is learned, not natural

Most adults by default jump to conclusions rather than test them, a habit that served human survival well. Thinking scientifically is not hard, it just isn't our habit, so it has to be built through practice. That is why learners slip back into old patterns when they try a new way of thinking.

  4. Understand the current state first

No tool, reorganization, or improvement method should be applied before the current situation is well understood. Fixes chosen before grasping how things actually work now are guesses.

  5. A shared direction defines improvement

An overarching long-term direction, a "true north," gives everyone the same understanding of what counts as improvement. Without it, many local improvement efforts can pull in different directions.

  6. Make improvement the goal itself

An organization whose primary aim is to keep improving, rather than simply to keep producing, can change as needs change. Making improvement the vision lets it notice shifts in what customers want and respond.

  7. Practice routines until they're second nature

A new way of thinking becomes a habit only through deliberate, repeated practice of a set pattern, the way martial artists drill movement sequences. Beginners get highly structured starter routines that guide them step by step. They follow the structure until they grasp the deeper purpose behind it.

  8. Managers' main job is coaching

Managers and supervisors should act chiefly as coaches who teach a pattern of scientific thinking every day, not as people who hand down answers. Coaching is itself a skill that needs its own practiced routine. The result is an organization where everyone solves problems, each guided by a coach.

  9. Move toward a defined target condition

Improvement works by first describing a specific desired condition, then working step by step toward it through problem solving and adapting along the way. The path to that condition isn't known in advance; it is discovered by trying things and learning. Management itself is the systematic pursuit of desired conditions by putting people's abilities to work together.
