  1. Worker ownership can dissolve solidarity

When workers become owners of their firm, they tend to pull back from wider labor solidarity. Asked to join other workers' strikes, cooperative members send only a token presence or stay away. Ownership ties their interests to the firm rather than to the working class around them.

  2. Owner-workers drift from political life

Workers with a stake in their firm put in longer, harder hours and spend less time in the bars and gathering places where political talk happens. In a culture that prizes taking action, this quietly drains the everyday spaces where workers organize. Neighbors who work elsewhere read the change as working too hard.

  3. Shared ownership doesn't end workplace conflict

Even where workers own the firm and vote on decisions, conflict between managers and the shop floor persists. Seen from the factory floor, the firm still has bosses and bossed. The democratic structure on paper hides this from outside observers.

  4. Idealizing a model by making it apolitical

Admirers of a celebrated model often present it as a neutral, apolitical institution and ignore what ordinary workers inside it experience. That cleaned-up image is what lets it travel as a universal template. The model's local political history and its internal tensions get left out.

  5. Cooperation rhetoric used against unions

Praise for cooperative relations between labor and management can serve a wider agenda of discrediting unions and working-class organizations. A success story of harmony becomes an argument that adversarial organizing is unnecessary. The idealized image is part of an ideology, not just a description.

  6. Better conditions versus collective power

Members of a cooperative may be better off than workers outside it and would not readily trade places. Yet the same arrangement can weaken the broader militancy that protects all workers. Judging the model depends on whether you weigh individual gains or class-wide strength.
