  1. One-sided deals don't last

A sale is an interaction, and an approach that benefits only the seller won't survive long. Methods endure when they help both sides, building a relationship the buyer is glad to continue. Creating real value for the customer is what keeps a way of selling alive.

  2. Prevent objections, don't handle them

What separates the best sellers from average ones is not skill at answering objections but how few objections they provoke in the first place. Objections are mostly a symptom of pitching before the buyer has felt a problem worth solving. Fix the earlier part of the conversation and the pushback largely disappears.

  3. Leave fact-finding fast, explore problems

Weaker sellers spend their questions gathering background facts and then jump straight into a pitch, often without ever asking about problems. Stronger sellers quickly move past the background and start probing what is going wrong for the buyer. Collecting facts feels productive but does little to make anyone want to buy.

  4. Questions in a deliberate sequence

Effective questioning follows an order: first the buyer's circumstances, then their problems, then the consequences of those problems, and only then the value a solution would bring. Each step builds on the last, so the buyer feels the size of the problem before hearing about any fix. Offering the solution early skips the steps that make it worth wanting.

  5. Small-sale tactics fail in big sales

Pressure tactics such as pushing hard for a close can work in small, one-off purchases but backfire in large, high-value ones. Methods built for quick consumer sales assume a single decision made in the moment. Big purchases involve longer relationships and bigger risks, so they need a different approach.

  6. Selling as creative problem-solving

Selling has shifted from persuading people to helping them solve problems in new ways. If the product alone could sell itself, buyers would just order it online. A salesperson is worth having only when they bring creativity and insight the buyer couldn't get elsewhere.
