  1. Positioning means being best at something

Positioning is the deliberate choice of what you are the best at, in an area a market cares a lot about. It is not a slogan or a vague description. It is a claim of superiority on a dimension buyers already value.

  2. Makers can't see their own confusion

The people who build a product find it obvious, but customers meeting it cold often don't understand what it is or why it matters. A great product that nobody grasps fails the same way a weak one does, because value that isn't understood isn't bought.

  3. Best-fit customers reveal the product

To figure out what your product really is, look at the customers who love it most and get the most from it. Their reasons for choosing it show which strengths matter and what market you actually belong in.

  4. Positioning is strategy, not marketing

Because positioning decides who you serve, what you compete against, and what you claim to be best at, it shapes the whole business. No single department can own it, just as marketing cannot own the overall company strategy.

  5. Inventing a new category is costly

Claiming a brand-new category means teaching the market that the category exists before you can sell into it. That takes far more marketing and education money than fitting into a category buyers already understand, so it should be a deliberate choice rather than a default.
