  1. Price drives profit more than anything

Prices decide how much money a business makes, which makes price the single most important factor in its results. A company that gets price right should not have to scrape by from one month or quarter to the next.

  2. Profit is for survival, not greed

A company should be run with profit in mind. This is not out of greed but because profit is what keeps the company alive.

  3. Price is where value meets money

Every purchase is a judgment of whether something is worth the money or time asked for it. Price is the exact point where the buyer's sense of value and the seller's demand for money meet. Setting a price is therefore really a decision about how the value a product creates gets divided between the seller and the buyer.

  4. Pricing is strategy, not bookkeeping

Price is not a narrow finance task to hand off to accountants. It shapes profit, how customers behave, where a product sits in the market, and even how the market itself is organized. That is why the top leaders of a company should own it.

  5. Hunches dilute pricing's impact

Good pricing mixes psychology, economics, strategy, tools and incentives, and it takes some math. Because that mix feels uncomfortable, managers swap in gut feeling and rules of thumb, or simply drop the parts they dislike. The result is easier to swallow but has too little force to change customers' behavior or the business's results.

  6. Perceived value sets what people pay

What a customer will pay depends on how they perceive a product's value, not on what it cost to make. Disciplined pricing starts by understanding that perception and how it differs between groups of customers, then trades these differences off deliberately.

  7. Pervasive but poorly understood

Price is the most powerful and widespread economic force in daily life, from new gadgets to oil to bargain-store markdowns. Yet it is one of the least understood. People meet the logic behind prices everywhere and rarely stop to work out how it operates.
