In late-1990s Athens, Inspector Kostas Haritos investigates a murder in the nightlife world, and the trail leads into organised crime with protectors in politics and business. He is squeezed from both directions, by criminals who want the killer found on their own terms and by superiors who want certain doors left closed. The case shows a detective forced to work the gap between what is true and what the system will allow him to prove.
In post-junta Greece, the novel presents organised crime and political patronage as one interlocking network, not as separate spheres that sometimes touch. Because criminals and officials exchange protection for favours, an honest investigation threatens the whole arrangement, and it gets quietly redirected rather than openly blocked. Solving the case becomes a negotiation over which truth can safely surface.
Haritos reads dictionaries at night, and the habit works as a method: pinning words to exact meanings defends him against the euphemism and evasion of officials, suspects and the media. His precision with language parallels his investigative stance. He refuses to accept the vague official version and insists on what things actually are.
