Cook Ding carves the ox effortlessly
Cook Ding tells Lord Wenhui that he has used the same cleaver for nineteen years and its edge is still as sharp as the day it was ground. He no longer sees the ox with his eyes but follows its natural seams, sliding the blade through the hollows between joints so it never strikes bone. When he reaches a tangled spot he slows down, focuses, and lets the part fall away. Mastery here means yielding to the structure of the material instead of forcing through it.
