1. Four strategies for surviving the cold

   Animals facing winter choose among a small set of answers: leave (migration), shut down (hibernation or torpor), insulate and endure (thicker fur, feathers, fat), or stockpile (caching food in autumn). Each strategy trades a different resource, whether distance, metabolic rate, body mass or advance labor, against the same problem of cold plus scarce food. Sorting any creature into one of these buckets explains most of its winter behavior.

2. Winter is an energy budget problem

   The core danger of winter is not the cold itself but the gap between the energy an animal burns to stay alive and the energy it can find. Every winter adaptation either cuts spending (sleeping, lowering body temperature, reducing movement) or secures income in advance (fat reserves, hidden food stores, travelling to where food still exists).
