1. Tian Xiao'e barred from the ancestral hall

   Tian Xiao'e flees a humiliating concubinage to marry the farmhand Heiwa, but patriarch Bai Jiaxuan refuses to let the couple worship in the clan ancestral hall, forcing them to live in a cave outside the village. Cut off from legitimate standing, she is used by Lu Zilin in revenge schemes, including seducing and ruining Bai Jiaxuan's heir Bai Xiaowen, and is finally murdered by her own father-in-law, Lu San. When a plague follows her death, the villagers blame her ghost, and Bai Jiaxuan builds a pagoda over her bones to suppress it.

2. Bai Jiaxuan's land swap for fortune

   After seeing a plant shaped like a white deer in the snow on a neighbor's field, Bai Jiaxuan trades his own fertile land for that poor plot so he can move his father's grave onto the auspicious site. He hides his real motive and presents the deal as generosity. The clan's later prosperity is credited to the move, so a private act of geomantic calculation is told afterward as the origin of its fortune.

3. The clan compact as rural government

   Where the state was absent, order on the Plain rested on the Confucian village compact and the ancestral hall. The compact drafted by the scholar Mr. Zhu set rules, the patriarch enforced them with public punishment, and the clan controlled who could marry and who was recognized. These institutions produced stability and moral discipline, but that same power of recognition could cast out the people it judged and leave them to destruction.

4. National ideologies as vehicles for local feuds

   As Nationalists, Communists, bandits and warlords sweep across the Plain, villagers join the side that suits their kin loyalties and old grudges more than any doctrine. Brothers and cousins end up in opposing camps, and the violence of the revolution settles scores between the two clans. Read this way, the great political upheavals of the century appear as new instruments for very old rivalries between neighbors.
