1. D-503's diary, soul, and Great Operation

   D-503, chief engineer of the spaceship Integral, begins a diary praising the One State's glass houses, numbered citizens, and hour-by-hour Table of Hours. His affair with the rebel I-330 makes him dream, feel jealousy, and help the Mephi plot to seize the Integral, and a doctor diagnoses this as having 'developed a soul'. The plot fails, D-503 undergoes the state's Great Operation that burns out the imagination, and he calmly watches I-330 being tortured under the Gas Bell, and in his last entry he expects reason to win.

2. Happiness and freedom trade off inversely

   The regime's founding argument is that happiness and freedom stand in inverse proportion: people with unlimited freedom choose chains and suffer, so removing choice removes the source of unhappiness. It presents paradise as the state in which people no longer have desires to choose between. Under this logic, surveillance, scheduled sex via pink tickets, and execution count as kindness, because they protect citizens from their own capacity to want.

3. Imagination as a disease to excise

   The State identifies imagination, the ability to picture something other than what is, as the organ that produces dissatisfaction, and treats it as a curable illness. The fix is a surgical procedure that destroys the brain center responsible for fancy, after which citizens become perfectly content. The mechanism is that total control requires attacking not what people do but the faculty that allows them to conceive of doing otherwise.

4. No final revolution, only entropy and energy

   I-330 argues that there is no last number and so no last revolution. Every achieved order hardens into entropy, dogmatic stability, and must be broken by energy, heresy, to stay alive. Read this way, any system that declares history complete is simply the next thing to be overthrown, and heretics are necessary to keep thought alive rather than being errors to correct.
