  1. Seeing precedes and exceeds words

The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled: we see before we can speak, and sight establishes our place in the world before language explains it. What we know or believe then conditions how we see, so vision is never a neutral recording but an act shaped by assumption.

  2. Reproduction destroys the image's aura and authority

Before the camera, a painting existed in one place and its meaning was anchored there; mechanical reproduction detaches the image, multiplies it, and lets it enter many contexts (the home, the advertisement, the textbook). This transfers meaning-making power from the original's unique presence to whoever now surrounds, crops, or captions the copy.

  3. The nude is seen for a male spectator

In the European oil-painting tradition the female nude is composed for an implied male viewer standing outside the frame, and the woman's posture, gaze and self-awareness are arranged to flatter and acknowledge him. The woman is thus split into surveyor and surveyed: she watches herself being watched, treating her own appearance as the object another will judge.

  4. Oil painting encoded ownership of things

The oil-painting medium, with its capacity to render texture, sheen and solidity, was well suited to depicting possessions as tangible and buyable, so the genre repeatedly celebrated the owner surrounded by what he owned. The painting functioned partly as an inventory of wealth and a confirmation of the patron's status as proprietor.

  5. Mr and Mrs Andrews in their land

Berger reads Gainsborough's portrait of Mr and Mrs Andrews, a couple seated at the edge of their own fields with crops and fenced acreage stretching behind them, as not merely a pastoral pleasure but a record of landowners pictured with the property they possess. The landscape is their estate, and the painting presents their proprietorship as part of their identity.
