In a small Bulgarian town under Ottoman rule, as 1876 approaches, the calm is only on the surface—neighbors are quietly readying themselves for revolt. Into this tension walks an escaped revolutionary, taken in by a local family, drawn toward old friends, new love, and a cause that will test everyone's loyalty.

  1. Fear spreads and dissolves resistance

When a rising fails, fear moves through whole villages like an infection, and people act in unison rather than as individuals. It drains the will to act and turns neighbours against one another, because staying alive becomes everyone's highest goal.

  2. Calm surface over quiet preparation

Under foreign rule, an ordinary peaceful village can be a front: daily gossip, loves and small-town oddities carry on while people quietly get ready to revolt. The rebellion grows slowly out of that everyday life rather than breaking in from outside.

  3. Motives split a community's loyalties

When a revolt is coming, each person joins or resists it for private reasons: love, fear, ambition, self-interest. Those mixed motives make betrayal and conflict inside the community as likely as unity against the ruler.
