1. A senior official's fall unravels his household

   In Entebbe under Idi Amin, the father of Christine, Patti and Rosa is a senior government official whose drinking costs him his job and, with it, the family's comfortable standing. The mother becomes the sole support of the household while the daughters watch their father's authority shrink into an embarrassing presence at home. The collapse happens gradually, through lost income, lost respect and lost certainty, rather than through one dramatic event.

2. Being kept like an aquarium specimen

   In the title story, Christine, a university student, becomes involved with an older white expatriate who keeps tropical fish. She comes to see herself as one of them: an exotic creature he admires, feeds and contains. The metaphor exposes how a relationship that brings a young woman comfort and access can also turn her into a possession that is looked at more than known. Power differences of age, race and money are exchanged for material ease.

3. Siblings split into different escape routes

   When the family's security collapses, each sister follows a different path out of the damage. Rosa, the eldest, turns to sexual freedom and dies of AIDS. Patti, the middle sister, becomes a born-again Christian and takes refuge in strict faith. Christine, the youngest, emigrates to America. The same household breakdown produces opposite coping strategies, so each daughter's life works as a controlled comparison of what excess, piety and flight cost.

4. Return migration produces a second estrangement

   Christine goes to Los Angeles and comes back to Uganda eight years later. She has been an outsider abroad, and on her return she finds that home no longer fits either. The migrant ends up alienated twice: marked as foreign in the host country, then out of step with the family, language and expectations she left behind. Returning therefore does not restore belonging; it forces her to build a self that belongs fully to neither place.
