1. Rescued Cat Threatens a Victorian Marriage

   Historian Verity Kindle saves a drowning cat, Princess Arjumand, in 1888 and brings it forward through the time net to 2057, which should be impossible because the net blocks consequential objects. Ned Henry, badly time-lagged from endless trips hunting the Bishop's Bird Stump for Lady Schrapnell's rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral, is sent to the Victorian Thames to return it. His presence makes Terence St. Trewes miss a meeting with Maud and upsets who the heiress Tossie Mering was supposed to marry, so the historians scramble to restore the matchmaking the future depends on.

2. History as a Self-Correcting Chaotic System

   The space-time continuum is modeled as a chaotic but self-stabilizing system. It absorbs small perturbations through 'slippage', shifting a traveler's arrival in time or place so they cannot do harm. The novel's twist is that an apparent incongruity may itself be the system's correction, with the historians' blunders serving as the mechanism by which history repairs itself.

3. Decisive Outcomes Hinge on Trivial Details

   Large historical outcomes, such as battles, the course of the Second World War, or the Coventry raid and the Enigma secret, turn on tiny contingent events like a missed appointment, a lost object, or a chance remark. Because causes in a chaotic system are nonlinear, you cannot know in advance which detail is load-bearing. Any small act is therefore potentially world-altering.

4. Obsession with Authentic Trivia as Driver

   Lady Schrapnell's motto, 'God is in the details', and her fixation on recovering an ugly, insignificant Victorian flower stand drive the whole plot and grind her historians into exhaustion. Seen this way, the fanatical pursuit of a seemingly worthless artifact is both comic tyranny and, in the end, the thing that locates the pivot of history. The trivial object turns out to matter.
