1. Operation Witchcraft: the Circus's trusted poisoned source

   Percy Alleline, Bill Haydon, Roy Bland and Toby Esterhase ran 'Merlin', a supposed Soviet source whose high-grade reports ('Witchcraft') won them Whitehall's praise and renewed American intelligence sharing. The channel's real purpose was to give Haydon, the mole codenamed Gerald, protected access to a Soviet officer, Polyakov, so he could pass British and American secrets. Control, the Circus's former chief, suspected a mole and sent Jim Prideaux to Czechoslovakia in Operation Testify to learn the mole's identity. The operation was betrayed: Prideaux was shot and captured, Control was forced out, and the men he suspected took over the Circus.

2. Sanctioned contact as cover for betrayal

   The safest way for a traitor to meet his enemy handler is to be officially ordered to meet him. Haydon's meetings with Polyakov were explained internally as Polyakov being the Circus's own agent inside the Soviet embassy. Each contact that should have looked like treason was therefore logged as loyal work, and the organization's own paperwork shielded the betrayal.

3. Institutions protect whatever source feeds their success

   An organization that is desperate for a win will defend the channel that supplies it and treat doubters as disloyal or jealous. The Witchcraft reports restored the Circus's prestige, its budgets and its standing with the Americans. Questioning the source therefore meant threatening everyone's advancement, and that made the deception self-sustaining from the inside.

4. Reconstruct from records, then force the move

   Smiley works from outside the Circus using stolen logbooks and files. He looks for gaps, unexplained absences and access patterns that only one person could account for. He then has a message sent that the mole cannot ignore, which obliges Gerald to arrange an urgent meeting with Polyakov at the safe house, where Smiley waits. Documentary inference narrows the suspects, but proof comes from making the suspect act on his own compulsion.
