1. Zurich clinic that rebuilds past decades

   In the novel, the enigmatic Gaustine opens a geriatric clinic in Zurich for people with Alzheimer's, with the narrator as his assistant. Each floor recreates a specific decade down to its furniture, songs, smells and newspapers, and patients become calmer when placed in the decade their memory still inhabits. Soon healthy people start checking in to escape the present, and the idea spreads from a therapy for individuals to a political program for whole countries.

2. Nostalgia floods in when the future disappears

   The book argues that when a society can no longer imagine a desirable future, the past becomes the only available horizon, and people begin to demand it as a political product. The appetite for returning to a decade reflects an exhausted capacity to project forward more than genuine love for that era. Nostalgia therefore works as a symptom of lost futurity, not as a policy with content of its own.

3. Every chosen past is a curated set

   The recreated decades are staged environments assembled from selected objects, songs and moods, with the era's fear, shortages and violence left out. Seen this way, collective nostalgia is a demand for an aesthetic composite rather than a historical period. When nations hold referendums on which decade to return to, voters split between incompatible edited pasts, and the vote exposes that a society shares no single past, only competing stage sets.

4. Societal dementia and the return of catastrophe

   The novel parallels individual memory loss with a continent losing its lived memory of the twentieth century as the generations who remember its catastrophes die. A society that forgets why it left a past no longer has any defense against re-entering it. Once one decade is revived, the adjacent decades that followed it, including war, become reachable again. The narrator's own growing forgetfulness mirrors Europe's.
