In Zhuravlyova's story, a starship runs on a fixed mass budget, and that budget, not merit or sentiment, determines who can survive the voyage. An artist aboard answers the arithmetic with a human response, so the ship's closed equation is set against something that cannot be weighed. The case tests any claim that hard physical limits settle moral questions by themselves.
When a system has a hard limit such as mass, fuel or air, every person becomes a quantity that has to fit the equation, and the moral question gets restated as a calculation. Seeing a situation this way shows how the design of the constraint quietly decides the outcome before anyone deliberates. It also directs attention to who wrote the budget and what the budget left out.
The story places an artist opposite the mass budget to argue that a human response to cold arithmetic does not have to overturn the numbers to matter. Art supplies meaning, memory and dignity, and a purely quantitative accounting has no line item for them. Survival decided by the numbers is therefore incomplete unless something also answers for what the numbers ignore.
