1. Bangkok's seedbank, coup, and flooded city

   In a post-oil future, Thailand survives the engineered crop plagues that ruined other nations by sealing its borders and secretly keeping a seedbank of pre-plague genetic stock. That seedbank is what the American AgriGen agent Anderson Lake is hunting while posing as a kink-spring factory owner. A factional war between the protectionist Environment Ministry and the free-trade Trade Ministry, tipped into a coup after the discarded Japanese windup Emiko kills a powerful official's circle, ends with Environment officer Kanya opening the levees to drown Bangkok and carrying the seedbank off with monks rather than let foreign companies take it.

2. Calorie companies: empire through engineered sterility

   Agribusiness firms sell high-yield seeds engineered to be sterile, so farmers cannot save seed and must buy again every season, turning food into a subscription controlled from abroad. The same firms' genehacked blights and pests, whether released or leaked, destroy the crops that could compete, which widens that dependency. Market power becomes political power without armies, because a nation that cannot feed itself without a license has already surrendered its sovereignty.

3. Designed flaws as instruments of control

   The 'New People' like Emiko are engineered with deliberate limitations. They have an obedience drive toward their owners, a jerky stutter-step motion that marks them instantly as non-human, and too few pores, so they overheat in tropical climates. These traits are not defects but a leash: they keep the manufactured being legible, dependent, and easy to punish.

4. Every economy reduces to stored calories

   Engineered elephants called megodonts are fed to turn factory cranks, and people wind kink-springs by hand or treadle to store joules. Seeing energy this way exposes that money, industry, and transport were always claims on food energy, briefly hidden by fossil fuel. Whoever controls calories therefore controls every other form of power.
