  1. Toad's motorcar mania and imprisonment

Toad of Toad Hall, rich and impulsive, abandons boating and a gypsy caravan the moment he sees a motorcar, then crashes several cars. He steals one and is sentenced to twenty years in jail. He escapes disguised as a washerwoman, only to find weasels and stoats occupying his ancestral home, which Badger, Rat and Mole help him retake through a secret tunnel. The episode shows compulsive novelty-seeking in a person with wealth and no restraint: each new craze wipes out the last, and only friends acting against his wishes save him from ruin.

  2. Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Searching all night on the river for Otter's missing son, Rat and Mole are drawn by unearthly music to an island. There they meet Pan, the guardian of wild creatures, sheltering the lost baby otter, and they feel awe rather than fear. Pan then gives them the gift of forgetfulness, so the vision fades into a vague happiness and does not haunt them afterward. The episode presents the sacred in nature as real and protective, and suggests that ordinary life can only go on if the direct encounter is softened into memory.

  3. Dulce Domum: the pull of home

Mole, walking through winter countryside with Rat, suddenly catches the faint scent of his own abandoned burrow and is overwhelmed by longing. He sobs when Rat first pushes on, and Rat turns back so they can spend the night at the humble home. Home is shown as a bodily, almost animal tie that survives new adventures and wider horizons, and its worth lies in belonging rather than grandeur.

  4. Friendship means intervening against a friend's will

Badger, Rat and Mole put Toad under house arrest and try to reform him because his craving for motorcars endangers his life and fortune. The book holds that loyal friends carry a duty to restrain and correct one another, not just to indulge. Yet it also shows the limits of that duty: Toad fakes illness, escapes, and changes only after hitting real consequences.
