Idleness is a hidden expenditure because time is the raw material of life and cannot be recovered: 'Lost time is never found again.' Sloth works like rust, consuming faster than labor wears, so hours spent sleeping or idling are spending, not neutral rest. Industry pays debts while despair increases them.
Wealth is lost less through large catastrophes than through a steady drip of minor expenses on trifles, dainties and fashions: 'Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.' Because each purchase seems negligible, the cumulative drain goes unnoticed until the estate is gone, so frugality must be practiced at the level of the smallest outlay.
Borrowing to buy superfluities trades freedom for goods, since the debtor must make excuses, fear meeting the creditor, and eventually lie: 'The second vice is lying, the first is running in debt.' The creditor gains power over the debtor's time and dignity, and repayment days arrive faster than expected because 'creditors have better memories than debtors.'
After Father Abraham's long speech of maxims urging thrift, the auction crowd approves the doctrine and then immediately does the opposite, buying extravagantly. The frame shows that assent to wise precepts is cheap and habits are unchanged by exhortation alone; the narrator alone resolves to wear his old coat longer.
