A Life Sampled as Annual Vintages
The novel gives one chapter to each yearly meeting and labels each with a wine term, so a whole life is read as a series of vintages rather than as continuous time. Each chapter shows only one night, and the reader must infer the year's births, deaths and changes from what has shifted since the last visit. This makes aging, loss and change visible as sudden jumps between snapshots.
