  1. Legal capitalism outdoes ordinary crime

The respectable institutions of business do more damage than the outlaw does, only without breaking any law. Robbing a bank is small next to founding one, and killing a man is small next to employing one, so the line between criminal and businessman is thinner than polite society admits.

  2. Food comes before morals

People cannot be asked to behave well while they are going hungry; filling the stomach has to come first, and only then can anyone afford a conscience. Preaching virtue to the starving puts the order the wrong way round, so whoever demands morality from the poor owes them a meal first.

  3. Morality as a living, not a practice

Every layer of society, from top to bottom, earns its keep by using moral talk rather than by actually being moral. Virtue gets turned into a trade, something to exploit or sell, so piety and fraud can sit comfortably in the same person.

  4. Charm hides the knife

The dangerous man shows the world a pleasant, smiling face and keeps his weapon out of sight. People admire the pretty teeth and miss the blade, so his violence goes unnoticed even when its results are everywhere.
