1. Murderer loops through a bicycle-haunted afterlife

   The nameless narrator helps John Divney kill old Mathers with a spade to steal a black cash box, and when he reaches for the box under the floorboards he is in fact killed by a bomb Divney planted, though he does not know it. He wanders into a parish where Sergeant Pluck and Policeman MacCruiskeen run a police barracks, where a hidden eternity is reached by a lift, and where he is sentenced to hang. Sixteen years later Divney dies of shock on seeing him, the two walk together back to the barracks, and the opening scenes begin again word for word, so the damnation is endless repetition that neither man remembers.

2. Atomic theory of men becoming bicycles

   Sergeant Pluck explains that riding on rough roads makes atoms pass between rider and machine, so that long-serving cyclists become part bicycle and their bicycles become part human. The men lean against walls and cannot stand unaided, and the bicycles creep toward warm kitchens. A pseudo-scientific premise is held to with complete bureaucratic seriousness, and the absurdity comes from rigorous deduction from a false premise, not from randomness.

3. Footnoted savant as satire of scholarship

   Long footnotes record commentators feuding over his work, sometimes spilling across many pages. The joke is that scholarly apparatus lends unlimited authority to nonsense, and that devotion to a theorist can outlast any test of whether he makes sense.

4. Hell as forgetting-driven repetition, not torment

   The book's punishment is a closed loop, not fire: the dead man keeps re-entering the same nightmare because he forgets each cycle, so every arrival feels new, fearful and strange. Horror works through the reader's recognition in the final pages that the confident, reasonable voice has been damned all along, which turns the whole comic narrative into evidence of the sentence. Without memory, no lesson can accumulate and escape is impossible.
