The novel argues that empirical method does not close off questions of the soul but leads straight to them. A laboratory intervention on the brain produces results that brain-based explanation cannot contain, so rigorous science itself generates evidence for a nonmaterial dimension. On this view, faith and experiment are continuous rather than opposed.
Personal identity is located in memory rather than in flesh. If memories can surface that belong to bodies long dead, then the self that carries them is not produced by any one brain. Recall that crosses lifetimes becomes the test for whether a soul exists independently of matter.
Probing the hidden structure of existence by chemically forcing it open is not a neutral act. The researcher who pulls on the threads is drawn into them, and his detachment and control erode. Forbidden or boundary-crossing knowledge is framed as a trap that captures the one who seeks it, like a spider's web.
