1. Miss Shanghai's third runner-up and her gold

   Wang Qiyao, an ordinary longtang girl, places third in the 1946 Miss Shanghai contest and becomes the kept mistress of Director Li, a Nationalist official who installs her in the Alice Apartments and leaves her a box of gold bars before dying in a 1948 plane crash. She spends the Maoist decades quietly in a back alley giving injections, hosting mahjong and afternoon-tea gatherings, and raising a daughter alone after her lover Kang Mingxun refuses to marry her. In 1986 she is strangled by Long Legs, a young hanger-on who had come to rob her of Director Li's gold.

2. History registered through domestic trivia, not events

   Revolution, collectivization and the Cultural Revolution stay almost offstage. The epoch appears in what changes inside rooms: which snacks can be bought, who comes to afternoon tea, whether a qipao can still be worn, what the neighbors whisper. Reading an era through gossip, food, clothing and interiors shows how ordinary people actually experience political upheaval, as a gradual rearrangement of habits.

3. The longtang girl as city archetype

   The novel treats Wang Qiyao as a type rather than an exception. Every alley has its 'Wang Qiyao', a girl shaped by lane-house gossip, rooftop pigeons, boudoir intimacy and modest petty-urban aspiration. The city's character is carried by these typical, pretty-but-not-remarkable women rather than by its heroes or elites, so one ordinary life can stand in for a whole urban sensibility.

4. Nostalgia consumes people as symbols of lost eras

   In the reform years, young Shanghainese like Old Colour court Wang Qiyao because she embodies the glamorous 1940s they romanticize, not for herself, and they drift away when the aging woman fails to match the image. The same backward gaze turns her last remnant of the old world, Director Li's gold, into the lure that gets her killed. Fetishizing the past strips living survivors of it down to objects of desire and plunder.
