It then appeared in the samizdat journal Today (Jintian), which Bei Dao co-founded with Mang Ke in 1978 and posted on Democracy Wall. In 1989 students displayed its lines on banners in Tiananmen Square, which turned a young poet's private refusal into a public slogan across two generations of dissent.
Bei Dao was outside China when the June 1989 crackdown happened. Authorities associated him with the movement his poems had inspired, and he was barred from returning. He spent years moving among European countries and the United States, separated from his family, and was permitted a brief visit only much later, when his father was ill. The book's arc from Misty Poetry to exile poems is built on this rupture.
Official critics used the label "Misty" (menglong) as an insult for poetry they found obscure. The obscurity was deliberate, though. Private imagery, fragmentation and ambiguity refused the transparent, didactic language that state-sanctioned literature required. Writing that cannot be reduced to a single approved meaning escapes easy co-optation and censorship by paraphrase.
Once removed from the audience and crisis that made his early poems slogans, Bei Dao's poetry becomes more compressed, dreamlike and hermetic, addressed to no collective. Loss of homeland removes the shared referents that public declaration depends on. The exiled poet's subject shifts from speaking for a people to documenting dislocation, memory and the instability of language itself.
Printing the Chinese originals opposite English versions by multiple translators makes translation visible as interpretation rather than transparent transfer. Readers can see where compression, ambiguity or wordplay in the Chinese resists English. Under this lens, a poem in translation reads as a record of choices among possible meanings.
