1. Rusty escapes his guardian's segregated world

   Sixteen-year-old Anglo-Indian orphan Rusty lives with his guardian Mr. Harrison in the European quarter of Dehra, where he is forbidden to mix with Indians. He takes a job tutoring Kishen Kapoor in English in exchange for a bare room on the Kapoors' roof, and stays there through his first love for Kishen's mother Meena and through her death in a road accident.

2. Belonging is chosen through shared ritual

   Rusty's identity shifts not through argument but through bodily participation in the life he was fenced off from: playing Holi, eating at the chaat shop, sleeping under Indian roofs. A chosen home earned through lived experience can outweigh an inherited one, and so Rusty finally gives up his plan to leave for England and stays in India.
