1. Princeton graduate abandons Wall Street for Lahore

   Changez, a Pakistani scholarship student at Princeton, joins Underwood Samson, an elite New York valuation firm, and excels by stripping companies down to their economic value. He sees the World Trade Center fall on TV during a business trip to Manila and involuntarily smiles. Over the following months, airport searches, a growing beard, American flags everywhere and India–Pakistan tensions pull him away from the firm, and he ends up returning to Lahore to lecture at a university and agitate against American foreign policy.

2. The janissary serving an empire against his own

   A janissary is a boy taken from a conquered Christian people and raised to fight for the Ottoman empire against his own civilization, and loyal because he has no memory of another. Changez takes on this identity when a Chilean publisher, Juan-Bautista, applies it to him during a valuation job in Valparaíso. He realizes that his elite professional skill serves the same American power that is threatening his homeland, and that his career depends on him never seeing it that way. The recognition makes continued service impossible.

3. Economic fundamentalism mirrors religious fundamentalism

   The firm's creed of 'focus on the fundamentals' is its own fundamentalism: an absolute, unquestioned belief that values everything by efficiency and treats the human cost of layoffs and closures as irrelevant. The title's fundamentalist is Changez, who reluctantly abandons this market faith, not a religious zealot. This recasts the question of who the ideological extremist is.

4. Nostalgia as a nation's retreat from reality

   Erica cannot let go of her dead boyfriend Chris, so she withdraws into an idealized past and finally into an institution. She is a figure for post-9/11 America, which responds to its wound by retreating into flags, nostalgia and a mythic earlier self instead of facing the present. Changez can only reach her by pretending to be Chris, so he can join America only by erasing his own identity. Read this way, a nation's sentimental longing becomes a refusal to engage the world as it now is.
