  1. Sandy Stranger betrays Miss Brodie

In 1930s Edinburgh, teacher Jean Brodie picks six girls at the Marcia Blaine School as her 'crème de la crème' and tries to direct their lives. She pushes Joyce Emily to go to Spain to fight for Franco, and Joyce Emily is killed. She also plans for Rose to become the lover of the art master Teddy Lloyd in her place. Sandy, the most perceptive of the set, sees that Brodie thinks she is Providence, tells the headmistress about Brodie's fascism so that she can be dismissed, and later becomes a nun who writes a treatise on 'The Transfiguration of the Commonplace.'

  2. Charismatic mentors turn protégés into instruments

A teacher who claims to be giving pupils 'insight' instead of facts gains power over them because the pupils cannot check that insight against anything outside the relationship. The mentor's taste and loyalty become the thing being taught. Pupils are then used to live out the mentor's own unlived desires, romantic and political, and this is framed as their own flowering.

  3. Prolepsis: knowing outcomes reframes present action

The narrative keeps jumping forward to reveal what happens later: who dies, who betrays Brodie, what becomes of each girl. It does this before the scenes that lead there. Because suspense about what happens is removed, attention moves to why it happens and to the moral weight of ordinary moments. A present choice then reads as something already fixed, which shows how present conduct amounts to a verdict on the future.

  4. The self-appointed Providence and its rivals

Brodie behaves like a Calvinist God who elects some people and decides their fates, but without accepting any moral limit on herself. That makes her vulnerable to a disciple who learns the same method of seeing through people and turns it back on her. Sandy's betrayal copies Brodie's own habit of deciding other people's destinies. It shows that someone who plays at predestination teaches the skills that will be used to overthrow them.
