Spots of time as renovating memories
A few intense childhood moments, often involving fear, loss, or strangeness rather than pleasure, are stored with such charge that they retain a 'renovating virtue'. When the adult mind is depressed by trivial routine or false reasoning, returning to these memories restores its sense of its own power. Their value comes from showing that the mind is lord over outward sense, not from what literally happened.
