In 'A Telephone Call,' a woman alone in her room waits for a man who said he would phone at five, and the entire story is her interior monologue. She bargains with God, counts to five hundred by fives, and swings between self-abasement and rage, all without the phone ever ringing. The piece shows how waiting on another person's attention can take over someone's whole inner life.
In 'Big Blonde,' Hazel Morse builds her life on being a 'good sport' who is always fun for men. As her marriage and a string of lovers wear her down, she drinks to keep up the cheerfulness they expect. She survives a suicide attempt with veronal, and the people around her treat it as an inconvenience. The story shows a woman whose worth depends on her good mood, and who is dropped as soon as her sadness shows.
Parker often tells a story almost entirely through what her characters say, with no narrator stepping in to judge. The reader sees the gap between what a speaker believes she is revealing and what she actually gives away. Condescension, bigotry or desperation come out through tics, repetitions and evasions, so the reader draws the moral while the character stays unaware.
In 'Arrangement in Black and White,' a white woman at a party loudly insists she has no prejudice while asking to meet a Black singer. Every sentence she speaks shows the condescension she denies. Parker's point is that people who announce their own tolerance often show it least, because the announcement is about their self-image rather than about how they treat the other person.
Parker locates cruelty less in dramatic villainy than in small, routine acts. Her examples include spouses bickering politely, a rich employer patronizing a working woman, and a lover's casual neglect. The damage builds up through inattention and self-absorption dressed in good manners, which lets the people doing it keep believing they are decent.
