Shame redirects itself onto the parent
When a child absorbs peer contempt for being different, the child does not merely hide the stigmatized trait; the child turns the contempt against the parent who is its living source. The rejection is enacted as refusing the parent's language, food, and affection, and the damage becomes irreversible once the parent is gone.
