Collegiate assessor Major Kovalyov wakes to find his nose gone. The barber Ivan Yakovlevich has found it baked inside his breakfast bread and dropped it into the Neva. Kovalyov then sees the nose in Kazan Cathedral dressed in the uniform of a state councillor, a higher rank than his own, and he is too cowed by its plumed hat and gold braid to demand it back with any confidence.
In a world where identity is defined by title and uniform, a body part can wear a higher rank and be treated as a greater person than the man it came from. The satire works by making the impossible thing, a walking nose, less shocking to Petersburg than the prospect of addressing a superior improperly. Once status is the measure of a person, the person becomes interchangeable with anything that carries the insignia.
When Kovalyov tries to recover his nose, the newspaper clerk refuses the advertisement because it might harm the paper's reputation. The police inspector suggests that respectable people do not get their noses pulled off. Every official treats an impossible event as a routine procedural matter, or a question of propriety, and never as a violation of reality, so bureaucratic form survives even when the world's logic collapses.
Kovalyov's anguish centres on the loss of social standing rather than the loss of a body part. Without his nose he cannot call on ladies, pursue a vice-governorship, or appear on Nevsky Prospect. When the nose simply returns to his face one morning with no explanation, he immediately resumes strutting and flirting, which shows that the crisis was only ever about how he was seen.
