1. Whoever Holds Your Name Holds You

   In the novel, control over a person runs through control over their true name and origin. The masters keep the children captive by keeping them ignorant of who they were before the Garden. Freedom requires recovering the name, not just leaving the place, because captivity persists wherever the captor still defines who you are.

2. Performance as Rehearsal for Selfhood

   Joining a traveling theater gives the uprooted children a structure for trying on roles in a world that will not hold still. Seen this way, a stable self is something assembled and rehearsed through performance and a borrowed community. It is not a fixed essence waiting to be found.
