1. Change everything so nothing changes

   Tancredi's maxim, 'If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change,' describes how an elite survives a revolution by joining it instead of resisting it. It gives up outward forms such as the monarchy, the flag and its political loyalties so that it can keep its real substance: property, status and access to power. On this view the revolution swaps the personnel and the vocabulary at the top while the underlying order of who holds what carries on.

2. The Prince declines the Senate seat

   In 1860 the Piedmontese envoy Chevalley offers Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina, a seat in the new Italian Senate. The Prince refuses. He says Sicilians are a people who want sleep and who resist improvement out of a vanity that believes itself perfect, and that he belongs to an unlucky generation straddling two worlds. He recommends the upstart Don Calogero Sedàra for the seat in his place, handing new power to the class that is replacing his own.

3. Tancredi marries Angelica, new money

   The Prince's penniless nephew Tancredi, an aristocrat who fought with Garibaldi, marries Angelica. She is the beautiful daughter of Don Calogero Sedàra, a crude, ambitious mayor who has grown rich from land deals. It passes over the Prince's own daughter Concetta, who had loved Tancredi, and it seals the fusion of the declining nobility with the rising bourgeoisie.

4. Decline seen from the dying observer

   The novel presents historical transformation through the consciousness of a man who clearly sees his class's end and chooses lucid detachment over struggle. The perspective runs from the ball, where he contemplates his own death, to his death in 1883, to the 1910 coda in which the elderly Concetta has the stuffed carcass of his dog Bendicò thrown out with the rubbish. Seen this way, the fall of an order registers less as a political event than as a slow erosion of meaning, until the relics of greatness become debris.
