Carpentier argues that in the Americas the marvelous is not invented by the writer but found in history, landscape and collective faith, arising when an unexpected alteration of reality is perceived by people who believe in it. The miracle requires belief: those who do not believe in saints cannot be cured by them. This sets it against European surrealism, which he sees as manufacturing wonder through willed technique.
Mackandal, a one-armed Mandingo slave, spreads poison across the plantations of the Plaine du Nord and is captured and burned alive at Cap Français in 1758. The white colonists see him die in the fire, but the assembled slaves see him turn into an insect or bird and escape the flames. The slaves return to the plantations convinced he is still alive among them, and that shared belief keeps the resistance going until Boukman's uprising in 1791.
The former slave turned King Henri Christophe copies European courts, building the palace of Sans-Souci and forcing his subjects, Ti Noël among them, to haul stone up the mountain for the Citadelle Laferrière, a fortress mortared, as the book tells it, with bull's blood. Having turned away from the vodou gods, he is struck down by a stroke during Mass, deserted by his people, and shoots himself. His body is sealed in the Citadel's wet mortar.
The novel shows domination changing hands from French planters to a Black king to mulatto surveyors who bring back forced labor, while the people underneath remain bound each time. After living through every regime, Ti Noël concludes that human greatness lies in struggling and suffering for others in 'the kingdom of this world'. This is not in a heaven where everything is already settled but in effort that has no final redemption.
