  1. Josephus surrenders at Jotapata

Commanding the Galilean defense at Jotapata, Josephus survived the siege and a suicide pact among the last survivors, then surrendered to Vespasian and predicted the general would become emperor. When that prediction came true, Josephus was freed and attached himself to the Roman side, later narrating the war he had fought against.

  2. Defeat narrated to flatter the victor

The account frames the revolt as the work of a fanatical minority who dragged a reluctant people into catastrophe, separating the nation from the rebels so the survivors can be reconciled to Roman rule. The same events read differently once you notice the narrator writes under the patronage of the people who won.

  3. Rebellion as reckless provocation of power

Josephus argues that resisting Rome was not courage but suicidal miscalculation, since Rome's resources were effectively inexhaustible and every local success only guaranteed a heavier reprisal. He presents submission to overwhelming power as the prudent reading of reality, not cowardice.
