1. Beheaded woman in missing tycoon's home

   In Stockholm, police find a woman's decapitated body in the home of Jesper Orre, the CEO of a clothing-retail chain who is known publicly for harsh cost-cutting, and Orre himself has disappeared. Detective Peter Lindgren works the case with Hanne Lagerlind-Schön, a criminal profiler in the early stages of dementia. The investigation chapters alternate with first-person chapters from Emma Bohman, a sales assistant in one of Orre's stores, who says she has been in a secret romance with him.

   Emma's devotion to a powerful, distant man grows from secrecy and absence, not from evidence. She reads silence, withdrawal and ambiguous gestures as proof of a hidden bond. The steep power gap between a store employee and the head of the company adds to the distortion, because the less access she has to the real person, the more freely she fills the gap with her own story.
