1. The locked gate and the alley woman

   Soon after her son Michitsuna is born, the diarist discovers that Kaneie is visiting a new lover, the 'woman of the Machi-no-kōji alley', and watches his carriage pass her own gate on the way there. When he later comes at dawn, she refuses to open the gate. The next morning she sends him the poem 'Sighing and sighing, sleeping alone, do you know how long the night is until it grows light?', a poem later chosen for the Hyakunin Isshu anthology. Years afterward she records, without apology, her satisfaction when that woman loses his favor and her child dies.

2. Writing truth against fabricated romances

   The diary opens by rejecting the popular court tales as 'soragoto', or empty fabrications. It argues that an unremarkable woman's actual life, recorded honestly, is worth writing down as a corrective to idealized fiction. Self-disclosure is presented as a kind of evidence: showing what marriage to a high-ranking man is really like tests the romance genre's picture of courtship.

3. Whoever controls visits controls time

   In a visiting marriage the husband decides when he appears, while the wife stays in place and waits. The imbalance of power is therefore felt as an imbalance of time. The diary's texture follows from this: long empty stretches of waiting and counting nights, then sudden arrivals, so that the man sets the rhythm of the woman's inner life without ever needing to exercise authority openly.

4. Withdrawal as the dependent party's leverage

   Lacking any formal way to hold Kaneie to account, she uses absence as her weapon. She refuses him entry, sends a cutting poem instead of a welcome, and eventually retreats to the Narutaki mountain temple while hinting she may become a nun. This forces him to come and fetch her. Withdrawal works because it reverses the usual pattern and makes him the one who waits, but it only lasts as long as he still cares enough to pursue her.
