1. Cao Qiqiao's Thirty Years in the Jiang House

   Cao Qiqiao, a sesame-oil shopkeeper's daughter, is married into the declining Jiang gentry family of Shanghai as wife to a son crippled by bone tuberculosis. She is scorned by her in-laws and drawn to her husband's charming, wastrel younger brother Jize. After her husband and mother-in-law die she takes her share at the division of the estate, drives off Jize when he comes professing love because she suspects he wants her money, and then ruins her own children. She keeps her son Changbai at home on opium, pries out details of his wedding nights and humiliates his wife until she dies.

2. The Golden Cangue: Wealth as Collar

   A cangue is a heavy wooden collar locked around a prisoner's neck. When money is the only payment someone gets for a life of denied desire, it becomes one: the fortune is the sole proof the sacrifice meant something, so it must be guarded above everything. That guarding makes every approach from another person look like a bid for the money. The same wealth that compensates for lost love makes love impossible to accept.

3. Denied Desire Turns Into Sabotaging Others'

   A person denied sexual and romantic fulfillment does not simply grieve it. They come to resent it in anyone within their control. Aging and unable to feed her own appetite, Qiqiao cannot bear her children's marriages succeeding, so she invades her son's intimacy and wrecks her daughter's courtship. Deprivation gets passed downward to dependents as enforced deprivation, rather than being repaired.

4. Domestic Control Through Engineered Dependency

   Look at how a household tyrant keeps her power: by making dependents unable to leave rather than by commanding them. Qiqiao pulls her daughter out of school, binds her feet, and gets both children hooked on opium. Each step shrinks their capacity to live independently, so control becomes self-sustaining. Her final blows land as offhand remarks rather than open orders.
