Shared blind spots distort gender
When outsiders study how men and women relate in another society, they carry in their own home-grown ideas about what gender is. Researchers and their feminist critics can share the same unexamined assumptions, so even a challenge to the old view can repeat its distortion. Gender relations in Pacific island societies were, the book argues, a particular casualty of this.
