1. The teacher, the actor, the swap

   He tracks the actor, António Claro (stage name Daniel Santa-Clara), through film credits and letters under a false name, and they meet to confirm identical bodies down to the scars, with António born half an hour earlier. António then humiliates Tertuliano by posing as him to sleep with Tertuliano's girlfriend, Maria da Paz. Both die in a car crash with António carrying Tertuliano's papers, so Tertuliano is officially dead and quietly takes over António's life and wife, until a phone call reveals a third identical man and Tertuliano sets out to meet him with a gun.

2. A duplicate turns uniqueness into rivalry

   Discovering a perfect copy threatens a person more than it intrigues him, because identity rests on being the only one of oneself. The two men argue over who was born first and so who is the original, because only one of them can be. Once they are interchangeable, each can use the other's face as a weapon.

3. Identity lives in documents, not bodies

   Society knows who someone is from papers, credits, registries and the clothes and wallet found on a corpse, not from who he actually is. When the bodies are indistinguishable, the paperwork decides who lives and who is buried.

4. Common sense as an ignored interlocutor

   The novel personifies Common Sense as a voice that argues with Tertuliano, warning him to destroy the videotape and leave the double alone. Tertuliano keeps overruling it with the excuse that he only wants to know, and each step of pursuit feels reasonable by itself. The disaster is built from these small, justified refusals to stop, not from one reckless leap.
