1. Diadorim revealed a woman only after death

   Riobaldo spends years in the bands loving his comrade Diadorim, son of the murdered chief Joca Ramiro, while tormented that the desire is forbidden between two men. After Diadorim kills the traitor Hermógenes in a knife fight at the Paredão and dies too, the body is washed and turns out to be a woman, Maria Deodorina, who had disguised herself to live as a jagunço and avenge her father. The truth that would have made the love possible arrives only when it can no longer be acted on.

2. The Devil is indistinguishable from human resolve

   Riobaldo goes at midnight to the crossroads of the Veredas-Mortas to sell his soul. Nothing visibly happens, yet he comes back hardened and takes command of the band as Urutu-Branco. Because the transformation would look the same whether a pact was sealed or he simply decided to become ruthless, the pact can never be verified. That leads to his conclusion that the Devil does not exist and only 'the human human' does, which moves responsibility for evil fully onto the person.

3. The backlands trial of Zé Bebelo

   Zé Bebelo is a would-be reformer who waged war on the jagunços. When he is captured, Joca Ramiro does not simply execute him. He convenes a formal trial in which the bandit chiefs argue his fate in the open. Zé Bebelo is sentenced to exile rather than death. Men outside any state law improvise legitimacy through procedure, and the verdict's leniency later feeds the betrayal that gets Joca Ramiro murdered.

4. Telling a life to find its meaning

   Riobaldo narrates out of order, doubling back and contradicting himself, to a silent educated listener. He is not reporting settled facts; he uses the telling to decide what his life meant and whether he is damned. His refrain 'living is very dangerous' marks experience as undecidable while it is lived. Meaning is assembled only afterward, in speech addressed to a witness.
