1. Dark Forest Theory of Cosmic Sociology

   The theory starts from two axioms: survival is every civilization's primary need, and civilizations grow while the matter in the universe stays fixed. Add two conditions. First, a chain of suspicion: one civilization can never verify another's intentions across light-years. Second, technological explosion: any weaker civilization might suddenly overtake you. The only stable strategy is then to stay hidden and destroy anyone who reveals their location, so every civilization acts as a silent armed hunter in a dark forest.

2. Luo Ji's Spell and Dead-Man Deterrence

   Luo Ji tests the theory by broadcasting the coordinates of the star 187J3X1 into space, and the star is later observed being annihilated by an unknown civilization. After a single Trisolaran probe destroys nearly the entire human space fleet of about two thousand warships, Luo Ji stands in a cemetery and ties a broadcast of Trisolaris's coordinates to a dead-man switch linked to his own life. Trisolaris backs down rather than risk exposure, and mutual deterrence between the two worlds begins.

3. The Wallfacer: Strategy Hidden in One Mind

   The sophons are Trisolaran particles that let Trisolaris watch every human communication and record, but they cannot read thoughts. Their outward actions are meant to mislead, so even their own side cannot tell a real plan from a feint.

4. Fleeing Humans Recreate the Dark Forest

   After the Doomsday Battle, the few surviving warships flee into deep space. Their crews calculate that there are not enough fuel and parts for all of them, so they preemptively attack one another and fewer than half the ships survive. The same suspicion and scarcity that drive alien behavior arise among humans once they are cut off and alone. This implies that cosmic sociology describes human nature under the same pressures.
